Government eases FASTag renewal burden for persons with disabilities
India's transport authorities have revised guidelines governing FASTag exemptions for the Divyangjan category, eliminating the requirement for annual renewal of exempted tags. The move is expected to provide significant relief to persons with disabilities who previously faced recurring administrative procedures.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has modified its FASTag policy framework to streamline processes for persons with disabilities availing exemptions under the Divyangjan category. Under the previous regulatory structure, eligible beneficiaries were required to renew their exempted FASTags annually, necessitating repeated verification and documentation submissions at toll plazas and designated renewal centers across the country.
The revised guidelines eliminate this annual renewal mandate, reducing administrative friction for a segment that the government identifies as requiring simplified access to national highways and expressways. Persons with disabilities holding valid disability certificates and meeting specified criteria continue to qualify for FASTag exemptions, but will no longer face the procedural requirement to revalidate their status each year.
The policy adjustment aligns with the government's broader disability inclusion agenda, which has emphasized removing barriers to mobility and access for persons with disabilities. The move is also expected to reduce operational burdens on toll authorities who previously managed high volumes of renewal applications during peak periods.
Transport ministry officials indicated that the revised framework maintains existing safeguards to prevent misuse while prioritizing convenience for eligible beneficiaries. State highway authorities and toll operators have been directed to implement the updated guidelines across all toll collection points. The government has urged persons with disabilities to verify their eligibility status through official NHAI portals to ensure seamless passage at toll plazas under the modified system.
