Government extends maternity leave to one year for women employees

India's government has announced revised maternity leave policies for its women employees, marking a significant expansion in workplace benefits for new mothers in the public sector. According to Human Resources Management Minister D. Sarathkumar, women government employees are now entitled to 365 days of maternity leave for their first and second children.

The policy introduces a tiered approach to maternity benefits based on the number of children. While women with one or two children receive the extended 365-day leave period, those with two or more children are eligible for maternity leave of up to 12 weeks. This differentiation aims to balance workforce continuity with support for growing families.

The extension of maternity leave to a full year represents a substantial increase from previous entitlements and aligns with international best practices in supporting working mothers. The measure is expected to provide women government employees greater flexibility in managing childcare responsibilities during the critical early months of their children's lives.

The revised policy underscores the government's commitment to enhancing gender-inclusive workplace practices and supporting women's participation in the public sector workforce.
