Government maintains private oversight of passport supplier Datasonic

The Malaysian National Security Council (MKN) has clarified that the government will not assume direct control of Datasonic, the private firm responsible for producing Malaysian passports, citing established regulatory mechanisms as sufficient safeguards.

In a statement addressing concerns over identity document security and national sovereignty, MKN said oversight of the passport supply system would be maintained through a combination of legislative frameworks, financial controls, administrative oversight and security protocols.

The agency's position reflects confidence in existing contractual and regulatory arrangements governing the passport production process. Malaysia has relied on Datasonic for passport issuance since the 1990s, with government agencies maintaining supervisory authority through formal agreements and statutory requirements.

The clarification comes as regional governments across Southeast Asia have increasingly scrutinised the security arrangements surrounding critical identity infrastructure. MKN's statement underscores the government's view that private sector involvement in passport production, when properly regulated, does not compromise national security or citizen sovereignty.

Official oversight mechanisms remain in place to ensure compliance with Malaysian security standards and international best practices in identity document management.
