Government modifies Agniveer scheme to enable permanent absorption pathway

The Cabinet has sanctioned modifications to the Agniveer scheme that fundamentally alter the career trajectory for recruits under the initiative. The changes, formulated on the basis of inputs from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, create a structured pathway for willing Agniveers to secure permanent commissions in their respective service branches.

Under the revised framework, Agniveers who demonstrate the requisite performance standards and meet prescribed selection benchmarks will have the opportunity to transition from their initial short-service contracts into permanent positions within the armed forces. This marks a departure from the original scheme architecture and addresses concerns raised by defence personnel and civil society regarding career prospects for contract-based recruits.

The decision reflects the government's intention to balance the operational flexibility offered by the Agniveer model with retention of trained personnel. By enabling absorption of high-performing recruits, the modification aims to build institutional continuity while maintaining the scheme's core objective of enhancing military recruitment efficiency and introducing younger cohorts into the defence establishment.

The implementation of these changes will be governed by existing service regulations and merit-based promotion criteria, ensuring that permanent appointments remain contingent upon demonstrated capability and organisational requirements. The move is expected to enhance the attractiveness of Agniveer positions and address recruitment challenges identified since the scheme's rollout.
