Government prioritizes public safety over platform access as Discord, Reddit bans lifted

MANILA — Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda and officials from the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) have pushed back against critics of recent platform restrictions, asserting that public safety considerations take precedence over continuous access to social networking services.
The government had implemented bans on the messaging application Discord and social news platform Reddit, citing concerns related to criminal activity facilitated through the platforms. The restrictions have now been lifted, though authorities maintain their position that such measures may be necessary in the future if circumstances warrant.
Officals argued that critics questioning the government's actions fail to appreciate the gravity of threats that justified the temporary closures. Aguda and CICC representatives emphasized that protecting Filipino lives remains the primary objective guiding their regulatory decisions regarding online platforms.
The lifting of the bans comes after government agencies determined the immediate security concerns had been addressed. However, authorities signaled their readiness to employ similar measures again if they identify credible threats to public safety originating from social media platforms.
