Government still deliberating motorcycle licence age hike to 18

KUALA LUMPUR — The government has not yet reached a final decision on whether to raise the minimum age for obtaining a motorcycle licence to 18 years, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Friday.

Loke said the proposal was still under deliberation and that a comprehensive review of the matter was underway. He noted that any changes to licensing requirements would need to be carefully considered given their potential impact on road users and the general public.

The potential age increase is part of broader efforts to enhance road safety in Malaysia, a country that has grappled with high motorcycle accident rates in recent years. Motorcycles remain a popular mode of transport across the nation, particularly in urban and suburban areas.

The minister did not specify a timeline for when a final determination would be made on the proposal. He indicated that the government would consult with relevant stakeholders and gather additional data before reaching a conclusion on the matter.
