KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian government is still evaluating whether to provide financial support to debt-laden airline AirAsia, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Friday.
Loke did not specify a timeline for when a decision would be reached, noting only that the proposal remains under government review. The announcement comes as AirAsia grapples with substantial financial obligations accumulated during the pandemic-affected aviation sector recovery.
Any potential assistance package would require careful assessment of the airline's financial position and strategic importance to the national economy, officials have indicated. AirAsia has previously signalled the need for government backing to stabilise its operations and service existing debt obligations.
The airline, founded by Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes, operates extensive regional routes across Southeast Asia and has been a significant employer in the country's aviation sector. Government support would likely hinge on whether authorities determine such intervention serves the broader national interest.
