Government stockpiles fertiliser as distribution bottlenecks persist

Government repositories across Bangladesh maintain sufficient fertiliser reserves to meet current agricultural demand, according to state authorities. However, the availability of stocks in central warehouses has not translated into adequate availability at the retail level, where farmers seek to procure supplies for their crops.

Distribution channels have emerged as the critical weak point in the supply chain. Despite adequate central reserves, the movement of fertiliser from government storage facilities to district and upazila distribution points remains sluggish, creating artificial shortages in rural areas even as warehouses remain well-stocked.

Officials attribute the bottleneck to multiple factors, including transport constraints, coordination difficulties between supply agencies, and delays in the release of stocks to retail distribution networks. The gap between government holdings and farmer accessibility has prompted concerns about potential yield impacts during critical growing seasons.

Authorities have pledged to accelerate the distribution process to ensure farmers can access required quantities of fertiliser at designated times. The focus now centres on streamlining logistics and strengthening the supply chain mechanisms that connect central warehouses to end-users in rural communities.
