MANILA — The government moved to address water security concerns on Wednesday, announcing the imminent distribution of filtration kits to help communities cope with an anticipated intensification of El Niño weather patterns. Officials from the Department of Social Welfare and Development said the water treatment technology has been vetted for safety and will provide households with access to potable water during the dry season.

The filtration kits are expected to reach beneficiary communities starting next week as part of the government's contingency measures to mitigate the effects of the "very strong" El Niño phenomenon. The DSWD emphasized that processed water using the filtration technology meets safety standards for human consumption.

The initiative comes as meteorological agencies have warned of unusually prolonged dry conditions that could strain water supplies across multiple regions. By equipping households with treatment kits, authorities aim to reduce public health risks associated with water scarcity and ensure vulnerable populations maintain access to clean drinking water throughout the critical period.

The government urged residents to prepare for extended water shortage scenarios and said additional support measures remain under review should the El Niño impact prove more severe than current forecasts.
