Government to overhaul 2019 mineral policy framework

India's mineral sector is set for a significant policy reset as the government moves to revise its 2019 National Mineral Policy framework. The review reflects shifting priorities within the ministry responsible for natural resource management, with particular emphasis on securing supplies of critical minerals essential for modern industries.

The policy overhaul comes as global demand for minerals used in renewable energy technologies, electronics, and defence applications continues to surge. India's move to strengthen its position in critical mineral sourcing is seen as strategic, given the country's growing manufacturing ambitions and energy transition goals.

Beyond critical minerals, the revised policy framework is expected to incorporate provisions addressing resource recycling and circular economy principles. This reflects international trends toward minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency in mineral extraction and processing.

The exploration of deep-sea mineral resources also features prominently in the government's revised priorities. As terrestrial reserves face increasing pressure, deep-sea mining is being evaluated as a potential frontier for meeting India's long-term mineral requirements, though such activities remain subject to international maritime regulations.

The timing of the review suggests the government believes the 2019 framework requires substantive updates to address contemporary challenges in mineral security, environmental sustainability, and technological advancement.
