Government to review UGC rules to ensure student safety and inclusion

The central government informed the Supreme Court that it will establish a dedicated committee to review the University Grants Commission's regulations and policies. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, stated that the government is committed to addressing student concerns and ensuring equitable treatment across all academic institutions.

The government's move comes amid concerns that current UGC guidelines may inadvertently create barriers for certain student groups. Mehta emphasized that the administration wants to guarantee that no category of students feels excluded or discriminated against under the revised regulations.

The proposed committee will undertake a comprehensive examination of existing UGC norms to identify potential gaps or provisions that could compromise student security and inclusivity. Officials indicated that the review would focus on safeguarding the interests of all learners, regardless of their socioeconomic background, caste, religion, or other demographic factors.

This development reflects growing scrutiny of higher education regulations in India, with education authorities seeking to balance academic standards with ensuring safe and welcoming campus environments for the entire student community.
