Government to support Islamic boarding schools with new educational framework

The government has announced plans to bolster Islamic boarding schools, known locally as pondok, by supporting their transition toward modernised educational frameworks. A number of these institutions have been identified as pilot centres for developing new approaches to Islamic learning that align with their respective areas of specialisation and educational disciplines.

The initiative recognises the important role pondok institutions play in religious and moral education across South and Southeast Asia. By allowing selected schools to serve as pioneers, authorities hope to establish a model that preserves traditional Islamic scholarship while incorporating contemporary pedagogical practices suited to each institution's distinct character and curriculum focus.

The framework will enable participating pondok schools to strengthen their academic standing while maintaining their core educational philosophies. Each selected institution will be encouraged to develop specialised programmes based on their existing strengths and religious teaching traditions.

Government support for the initiative is expected to enhance the overall quality and recognition of pondok education in the region, ensuring these institutions continue to meet the needs of their students and communities while adapting to evolving educational standards.
