Graft trial of ex-BFP chief Fernandez opens before Sandiganbayan

MANILA — The graft trial of former Bureau of Fire Protection chief Jesus Fernandez commenced Wednesday before the Sandiganbayan Third Division, with prosecutors streamlining their witness testimony strategy.

The prosecution cut its roster of witnesses from nine to six in preparation for the trial, signaling a more focused approach to presenting its case against the ex-BFP official.

Fernandez faces charges stemming from allegations that he received a P4 million bribe in connection with his official duties while heading the uniformed fire service. The case centers on whether the former chief engaged in corrupt practices during his tenure.

The Sandiganbayan, the court tasked with hearing corruption cases involving high-ranking public officials, will oversee proceedings as prosecutors present evidence and witnesses to substantiate the graft allegations against Fernandez.

The reduction in the number of witnesses may expedite the trial process, allowing the court to hear key testimonies without unnecessary delays. The case remains under scrutiny as the judiciary continues its crackdown on high-level corruption in government.
