Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has approached the Andhra Pradesh government with a proposal to set up a dedicated chess academy in Amaravati, seeking financial and administrative support for the project. The move comes as the accomplished player looks to contribute to chess development in her home state and nurture young talent.
Andhra Pradesh Minister Lokesh has responded positively to the Grandmaster's initiative, extending assurances of governmental backing for the academy venture. The minister also took the opportunity to congratulate Humpy on her recent achievements at the Chess Olympiad 2026, where she secured an individual bronze medal on Board 1 and contributed to India's women's team bronze finish.
Humpy's proposal reflects growing interest among India's elite chess players in establishing training centres and academies to develop the next generation of players. The establishment of such institutions has been credited with strengthening India's competitive position in international chess competitions.
With ministerial support now indicated, the Amaravati chess academy is expected to move towards formal establishment, potentially providing world-class training facilities and coaching to aspiring chess players in the region.
