Greece urges EU to activate asylum suspension powers amid migration crisis
Greece is pushing European Union leaders to strengthen and deploy emergency migration protocols, arguing that existing frameworks lack sufficient mechanisms to handle large-scale population movements. The push highlights deepening concerns over the adequacy of the bloc's recent migration agreement.

Greece has called on the European Union to activate provisions allowing member states to temporarily suspend asylum processing during mass migration surges, according to discussions within EU circles. Athens contends that while recent improvements to the bloc's migration framework represent progress, they do not provide adequate tools for responding to acute emergency situations.
The Greek government's position reflects frustration with what officials characterize as insufficient flexibility in the current EU migration pact. Under proposed mechanisms, member states facing sudden, large-scale arrivals would require capacity to manage processing backlogs without being constrained by standard asylum procedures that can extend decision-making timelines.
The appeal comes as the EU continues grappling with irregular migration flows from the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia toward European shores. Greece, positioned on the bloc's southeastern frontier, has repeatedly borne the initial impact of these movements, particularly through island territories in the Aegean Sea.
EU migration reforms agreed to in recent months established new solidarity mechanisms and burden-sharing provisions among member states. However, Athens argues these measures lack the emergency tools necessary to protect border integrity during acute crises, when processing capacity becomes overwhelmed.
