Greenland Parliament Approves US Security Pact with Unanimous Vote

Greenland's legislative assembly voted 16-0 to approve the defense accord with the United States, clearing the way for enhanced military cooperation between Washington and the Danish territory. The agreement permits the establishment and expansion of US military bases and the installation of advanced missile defense infrastructure on the strategically important North Atlantic territory.

The security pact represents a significant expansion of American military presence in the Arctic region, an area of growing geopolitical importance as climate change opens new shipping routes and increases resource accessibility. The unanimous parliamentary endorsement indicates broad political consensus in Greenland regarding the defense arrangement.

Arctic security has become an increasingly central concern for NATO and its allies, particularly given Russia's military modernization efforts in the region. The enhanced US military footprint in Greenland strengthens Western capabilities for monitoring and responding to activities in the Arctic, which sits along critical air and sea routes connecting North America and Europe.

The agreement follows growing international focus on Arctic geopolitics and reflects Greenland's strategic positioning as a key location for surveillance and defense operations in the region. The territory, while self-governing in most domestic affairs, remains under Danish sovereignty for matters of foreign policy and defense.
