Ground subsidence forces school project halt, flat evacuations in Kerala

A sudden ground collapse at Akkulam has prompted emergency action from district officials, with the Collector ordering an immediate halt to ongoing school building construction in the area. The earth cave-in, which occurred on Tuesday, opened dangerously close to residential apartments, raising serious safety concerns for nearby inhabitants.

The subsidence caused significant damage to infrastructure in the vicinity. A boundary wall was destroyed in the incident, while a 50-metre section of road fronting the apartment complex suffered considerable damage, rendering it unstable. The collapse occurred merely four metres from the residential building, underscoring the proximity of the hazard to occupied structures.

In response to the incident, the Collector has mandated the evacuation of residents from adjacent flat complexes as a precautionary measure. Authorities are investigating the cause of the ground subsidence, which could result from underground water seepage, poor soil composition, or other geological factors common to Kerala's terrain.

The construction suspension will remain in effect pending completion of a detailed geological survey and stability assessment of the site. Officials are expected to determine whether work can safely resume or if permanent modifications to the project design are necessary. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant for any further signs of ground instability in the affected zone.
