The initiative represents a modernization of Sri Lanka's product identification and tracking infrastructure, aligning local practices with global supply chain standards.
2D barcodes, which can encode significantly more information than their linear predecessors, offer enhanced data storage capacity and improved error correction capabilities. This technology enables businesses to store detailed product information, batch numbers, and expiration dates within a single code, streamlining inventory management and reducing manual data entry errors.
The transition is being promoted among retailers, manufacturers, and logistics providers across various sectors of the Sri Lankan economy. Industry stakeholders are being encouraged to adopt the new standard to facilitate smoother domestic and international trade operations.
