GST Council eases compliance burden for small online sellers

The GST Council's latest directive removes a significant operational hurdle for small online sellers who previously faced challenges in registering across multiple states. Under the new framework, merchants can now utilize e-commerce platform warehouses as registration addresses even when these facilities are located outside their home states, streamlining the registration process and reducing administrative complexity.

The move addresses long-standing concerns from the small seller community, particularly those operating through major e-commerce marketplaces. Previously, sellers were required to maintain separate registrations in each state where they held inventory or conducted sales, creating substantial compliance burdens and operational costs.

The Council simultaneously clarified the tax treatment applicable to e-commerce platforms themselves, establishing a more transparent framework for how marketplace operators should calculate and remit GST. This clarification is expected to reduce disputes between tax authorities and platforms regarding their tax obligations.

Existing GST rates across all categories remain unchanged following the Council's decision. The measures take effect immediately and are expected to encourage formalization among India's growing base of digital sellers while improving tax compliance in the e-commerce sector.
