GST e-invoicing pilot set for retail sector from April 2027
India's tax authorities are planning to launch a pilot programme for electronic invoicing in the retail sector starting April 2027. The initiative aims to bolster GST compliance and reduce tax evasion by enabling real-time tracking of consumer transactions.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) administration is preparing to test a digital invoicing system for retail businesses as part of efforts to strengthen tax compliance across the country. The proposed pilot programme, scheduled to commence in April 2027, will focus on select sectors and involve the electronic recording of consumer invoices at the point of sale.
The move represents a significant step in the GST regime's evolution toward enhanced digital accountability. By mandating electronic invoicing in the retail space, authorities aim to create a transparent audit trail of sales transactions, making it considerably more difficult for businesses to underreport revenues or evade tax obligations.
The pilot will serve as a testing ground for the technology and processes required to implement e-invoicing at scale across India's vast retail ecosystem. Officials expect the programme to yield valuable insights into compliance patterns, system performance and operational challenges before any broader rollout is considered.
The initiative aligns with the GST Council's broader digitalization agenda, which has progressively introduced technology-driven compliance measures since the tax regime's implementation in 2017. Industry stakeholders and businesses in selected sectors will be expected to participate in the pilot to facilitate smooth transition and data collection.
