GST process reforms to ease compliance burden for Indian businesses

GST process reforms to ease compliance burden for Indian businesses

The phased rollout of GST process improvements will bring relief to small sellers and e-commerce platforms struggling with compliance complexities. Key reforms approved by the Council include simplified registration procedures for micro-enterprises operating through digital marketplaces, unified documentation requirements for GST enrollment, and expedited refund mechanisms to improve cash flow for businesses.

Authorities have also established a Rs 10,000 threshold for issuing GST show-cause notices, reducing procedural burdens on small traders and startups. Officials confirmed that process reforms implementable through administrative directives will begin taking effect from November 1, 2026, with formal notifications and circulars expected to be issued by the tax authorities imminently.

Reforms requiring amendments to GST legislation will follow a separate timeline, with implementation scheduled for April 1, 2027. This staggered approach allows the tax system to adapt to procedural changes while legal amendments progress through formal legislative channels. The initiative reflects the government's broader push to reduce compliance friction and encourage formalisation of India's informal trade sector.
