GST return forms to undergo revision; public feedback invited from November

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) will invite stakeholder comments on proposed changes to monthly GST return forms beginning November 1, a senior tax official announced Thursday. The 30-day public consultation period, running through November 30, will be hosted on the MyGov portal to gather feedback from businesses and tax practitioners on the restructured forms.

The revised GST return formats follow the 57th meeting of the GST Council, which comprises finance ministers from the Centre and states. The Council approved modifications to the mechanism for amending tax liabilities and input tax credit (ITC) claims in GST returns, with the stated objective of minimising data mismatches and reducing the volume of tax notices and intimations issued to assesses.

Enhancements have been made to GST Forms GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, and IFF to facilitate improved reconciliation between details reported across these forms and those submitted in the monthly tax payment return, GSTR-3B. According to CBIC GST Policy Wing Commissioner Gaurav Singh, the department will simultaneously work towards streamlining the GST audit process as part of broader tax administration reforms.

The timeline for implementation of the amended GST return forms following the consultation period has not yet been specified. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their observations and suggestions during the designated feedback window to ensure the revised forms address practical compliance challenges across India's business ecosystem.
