The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has crossed the 75,000-case filing mark, underscoring the volume of disputes arising from India's indirect tax regime. Of the 75,155 cases filed before the tribunal, 5,819 have been formally registered in its system, while 83 have been disposed of to date.
The tribunal's performance reflects the gradual pace at which cases are being processed through the appellate machinery established to resolve GST-related disputes. The registration rate of approximately 7.7 percent indicates a significant backlog in case intake, even as the tribunal works through its caseload.
Initially, the tribunal had projected potential filings of up to 250,000 cases, suggesting that actual filing volumes have fallen substantially short of these expectations. This discrepancy may reflect lower-than-anticipated dispute rates or a possible lag in case submissions as businesses and tax practitioners adjust to the appellate process.
The modest disposal rate highlights challenges common to appellate tribunals in India, where case backlogs and processing timelines remain persistent concerns. As GSTAT continues operations, maintaining both efficiency and fairness in resolving complex GST disputes remains central to its mandate.
