GSTN expands e-invoicing scope with two reverse charge categories

India's GST infrastructure operator has expanded its e-invoicing framework by introducing two fresh categories designed to simplify reverse charge mechanism (RCM) compliance for businesses. The new RCM-DOM category facilitates e-invoice generation for eligible domestic purchases subject to reverse charge rules, while the RCM-IMP category covers imported services falling under similar provisions.

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) move aims to enhance transparency and standardize documentation for transactions where the recipient bears the tax liability rather than the supplier. These categories address gaps in the existing e-invoicing system and align with the tax authority's broader digitalization agenda.

Eligible businesses operating under reverse charge provisions can now generate e-invoices through the new categories, potentially reducing compliance friction and minimizing documentation errors. The framework update reflects GSTN's ongoing efforts to refine the e-invoicing system and accommodate evolving business requirements within India's GST ecosystem.

The introduction of these categories is expected to benefit enterprises engaged in cross-border transactions and domestic supplies where reverse charge mechanisms apply. The move underscores the tax authority's commitment to modernizing invoice management and ensuring standardized compliance protocols across the country's indirect tax framework.
