Gujarat couple turns heads at Navratri garba in heavy ceremonial turbans

During Navratri celebrations in Dahod, an unconventional fashion choice turned heads at the bustling Adyashakti Garba Chowk. A young couple participated in the traditional garba dance while sporting distinctively oversized turbans, drawing widespread appreciation from onlookers.

The custom headpieces were designed by artisan Maruti Soni, who crafted the turbans as a tribute to the courage and achievement of a pioneering Gujarati female pilot named Smit. The male dancer wore an 8-kilogram turban while his female partner wore a 2-kilogram version, both intricately designed to reflect traditional aesthetics.

The couple's appearance at the garba, a popular folk dance and social gathering central to Navratri celebrations across Gujarat, sparked enthusiasm among attendees. The gesture of honoring the pilot's accomplishments through ceremonial attire resonated with participants at the venue.

Dahod, located in central Gujarat, has been a hub of Navratri festivities during the nine-day festival period, with various events and cultural performances drawing residents and visitors.
