The Gujarat government has officially declared four districts as drought-affected following the conclusion of the monsoon season, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced. The districts of Devbhoomi Dwarka, Kutch, Jamnagar and Porbandar have been included in the drought declaration.
According to Patel, the decision was taken in accordance with the guidelines established by the central government. The drought status will remain in effect for a period of six months from the date of announcement, as per the Centre's 2016 drought management protocol.
The declaration typically triggers government support measures for affected regions, including relief provisions and agricultural assistance. The monsoon season, which concluded recently, appears to have resulted in insufficient rainfall across these districts, prompting the formal drought declaration.
The six-month designation allows the state and central governments to coordinate drought relief and rehabilitation programmes for the affected areas. Authorities will monitor conditions during this period to determine if an extension or modification to the declaration becomes necessary.
