Gujarat police bust fake ghee racket trading on Gir cow brand

Law enforcement in Gujarat's Junagadh district has cracked down on a fraudulent ghee manufacturing and distribution network that authorities say was deceiving consumers by marketing substandard products as authentic Gir cow ghee. The Special Operations Group conducted raids that resulted in the seizure of more than 300 containers of the suspect ghee.

According to investigators, the operation involved producing ghee using soyabean oil and chemical essences rather than genuine dairy products, then packaging and selling the mixture at approximately Rs 600 per kilogram. The use of Gir cow branding—a premium designation that commands higher prices in Indian markets—represented a significant consumer deception element in the scheme.

Gir cow ghee is considered a high-value product in India, with consumers willing to pay premium prices for its perceived purity and quality. The use of this designation on counterfeit products amplified the scale of the alleged fraud. Police have registered cases and launched further investigations into the supply chain and distribution network involved in the operation.
