Gujarat shelter home abuse case: eight children subjected to degrading treatment

Authorities in Kutch district have initiated a criminal investigation following allegations of abuse at a state-run children's shelter home. According to reports, eight minors were subjected to physical violence, verbal abuse, and degrading treatment by Latifa Begum, identified as a house mother at the facility.

The police complaint details accusations that the caretaker beat the children, subjected them to verbal abuse, and allegedly smeared human excrement on their faces. The incidents came to light after the complaint was filed, prompting the Madhpar police station to register a formal case for investigation.

The inquiry has expanded to examine the role of shelter home management and oversight mechanisms. Officials are examining whether administrative failures at the facility contributed to the alleged abuse and whether proper safeguards were in place to protect the vulnerable children in state care.

The case has raised serious questions about standards and supervision in Gujarat's childcare institutions. Authorities indicated that the investigation would assess compliance with child protection protocols and determine accountability at all levels of the shelter home's operations.
