Gurugram imposes work-from-home mandate, halts construction to combat pollution
Gurugram authorities have announced sweeping measures to curb air pollution, including a ban on dust-generating construction activities and a 50 percent work-from-home directive for office employees. The restrictions will remain in effect for over two weeks beginning early November.

Gurugram will enforce strict anti-pollution measures from November 5 to 20, 2026, as part of efforts to improve air quality in the National Capital Region. The Haryana city, which adjoins Delhi, has emerged as a significant pollution hotspot during the annual winter months when atmospheric conditions trap pollutants.
Authorities have prohibited dust-generating construction and demolition activities throughout the designated period. The ban covers all projects that involve excavation, material handling, or structural work likely to release particulate matter into the atmosphere. Officials are expected to conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with the directive.
In parallel, both government and private sector offices have been instructed to implement a 50 percent work-from-home arrangement for their staff. The measure aims to reduce vehicular emissions and congestion on city roads, contributing to overall air quality improvement. Companies failing to comply with the work-from-home directive may face penalties.
The restrictions are part of a broader regional strategy to combat severe air pollution that typically peaks in November and December. Similar measures have been implemented in neighboring areas, reflecting growing concern over air quality in the Delhi-NCR region. Residents and businesses have been urged to cooperate with these temporary measures to ensure measurable improvements in air quality.
