Guwahati Gets Northeast's First Visa Application Centre
The opening of a dedicated visa centre in Guwahati marks a significant development for the Northeast region, eliminating the need for residents to travel to distant cities for visa processing and reducing associated costs.

Residents of India's Northeast will no longer need to travel outside the region to apply for international visas, following the establishment of the first visa application centre in Guwahati. The facility, serving as a processing hub for visa applicants, is expected to substantially reduce travel expenses and time commitments for people seeking to visit countries across Europe, Asia, and other destinations.
Previously, residents of Assam and neighbouring northeastern states were required to journey to major metropolitan centres such as Delhi, Bangalore, or Kolkata to submit visa applications and attend interviews. This necessitated significant expenditure on travel and accommodation, in addition to taking time away from work and personal commitments.
The visa centre in Guwahati will handle document verification, application submission, and biometric collection for multiple countries, streamlining the process considerably. The facility aims to bring international visa services closer to residents in a region that has historically faced logistical challenges in accessing such services.
Authorities expect the centre to process applications more efficiently while reducing the financial burden on applicants. The development is likely to facilitate increased travel from the Northeast for purposes including business, education, tourism, and medical treatment, potentially supporting economic activity in the region.
