H1N1 dominates influenza cases in India, mass vaccination not urgent: ICMR

H1N1 influenza is responsible for approximately 98 per cent of all influenza A cases detected across India, according to findings from the Indian Council of Medical Research. The dominant prevalence of this particular strain has informed current public health guidance on vaccination strategy and risk mitigation.

Rajiv Bahl, who heads the ICMR, has stated that there is no pressing requirement for the broader Indian population to urgently seek influenza vaccination at this time. The assessment reflects the current epidemiological situation and the levels of immunity present within the community.

However, certain population groups face elevated risk from influenza complications and have been identified as candidates for preventative measures. Elderly citizens and individuals with compromised immune systems—including those with chronic health conditions or undergoing immunosuppressive treatment—are being encouraged to seek medical consultation regarding vaccination options.

Healthcare providers are advised to identify and counsel high-risk patients on the benefits of flu vaccination, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive appropriate protection while broader vaccination efforts remain targeted rather than universal.
