HAL, Safran to jointly develop indigenous helicopter engine for armed forces

HAL and Safran have formalized their partnership to develop an advanced helicopter engine that will equip the Indian armed forces' next-generation rotorcraft. The Aravalli engine, rated between 3,500 and 4,000 shaft horsepower, represents a significant step toward self-reliance in helicopter propulsion technology.

The collaborative project will see development responsibilities divided equally between HAL and Safran, leveraging the French company's expertise in engine design and HAL's domestic manufacturing capabilities. The engine is specifically designed to power HAL's Intermediate Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) platform and a naval variant tailored for maritime operations.

Production of the Aravalli engine will be established at HAL's manufacturing facility in Tumakuru, in Karnataka's industrial heartland. This decision underscores India's push to develop critical aerospace components domestically and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for defence hardware.

The development and production of indigenous helicopter engines align with India's broader defence modernization strategy and the government's push to boost domestic aerospace manufacturing capabilities. The partnership demonstrates the potential for technology transfer and knowledge sharing between domestic and international aerospace entities working toward meeting the armed forces' operational requirements.
