HAL seeks private sector partnership to bolster aerospace capabilities
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has acknowledged the need for greater private sector involvement in India's aerospace ecosystem, even as it grapples with delays in delivering Tejas fighter jets to the Indian Air Force due to engine supply constraints.

The defence manufacturer has 25 Tejas Mk1 airframes ready for delivery but faces production delays stemming from extended lead times in engine supplies from General Electric, according to HAL's Chairperson and Managing Director. The company is simultaneously awaiting a commercial proposal from GE for the powerplant that will equip the next-generation Tejas Mk2 variant.
HAL's leadership has underscored that the state-owned enterprise cannot independently fulfil the nation's expanding aerospace requirements, highlighting the critical role private manufacturers must play in strengthening India's defence industrial base. The acknowledgement reflects growing recognition within India's defence sector that meeting operational timelines and technological advancement demands a collaborative approach.
The delays in Tejas deliveries underscore the complexities involved in integrating imported subsystems into indigenous aircraft platforms. Engine supply bottlenecks have emerged as a significant constraint, with international suppliers managing multiple global commitments and extended manufacturing cycles.
The remarks come as India continues to push for greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing through its "Make in India" initiative, emphasizing partnerships between state enterprises and private industry to accelerate capability development and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers for critical defence systems.
