HAL to more than double Shakti engine output for indigenous helicopters

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is scaling up production of the Ardiden 1H1 Shakti engines at its Bengaluru facility to boost supply for India's indigenous helicopter programmes. The state-owned aerospace manufacturer currently produces 80 engines annually and aims to increase this to 180 engines per year through the new production line.

The Shakti engines power both the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and the Prachand light combat helicopter, which are key platforms in the Indian armed forces' modernisation efforts. The expanded production capacity will address supply constraints and accelerate deliveries of these helicopters to the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The increase in engine manufacturing reflects growing demand for indigenous rotorcraft as India seeks to reduce dependence on imports and bolster its defence industry. HAL has been pivotal in developing the Shakti engine in collaboration with international partners to ensure self-reliance in critical aerospace components.

The production expansion comes as the Indian military continues to induct Prachand helicopters following successful developmental trials. Enhanced engine output will enable HAL to meet contractual commitments while supporting India's broader goal of building a robust domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
