Half a million French protesters rally over schools, fuel and living costs
Over 550,000 people demonstrated across France today, voicing concerns about deteriorating teaching conditions, rising fuel prices and the broader cost of living crisis. While demonstrations remained largely peaceful in major cities including Paris, some protests turned violent.

An estimated 550,000 demonstrators took to the streets across France on Thursday, staging coordinated marches in several major urban centres to express frustration over interconnected economic and social issues affecting the nation. Paris alone saw approximately 110,000 participants converge on the French capital.
The protests centred on three primary grievances: inadequate conditions for teachers and students in schools, sharply elevated fuel prices at the pump, and the broader affordability crisis impacting household budgets. Student representatives and education advocates featured prominently among marchers, with some youth demonstrators articulating their anxieties about future opportunities amid mounting pressures on the education system.
Although the vast majority of demonstrations proceeded without incident, tensions escalated at certain locations as some protesters engaged in confrontations with authorities and property damage. Police deployed crowd control measures in response to the violent flareups, though the scale of disruption remained limited relative to the overall turnout.
The nationwide action reflects growing public anxiety in France over economic pressures and government policies affecting younger generations and working families. Organisers have indicated further demonstrations may be planned as negotiations between protest leaders and government officials continue.
