Authorities in Zamboanga del Sur seized an estimated P520,000 worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a joint law enforcement operation in Pagadian City on Monday evening, according to officials from the regional police command.
The buy-bust was conducted around 8:50 p.m. in Purok Gemilina, Barangay Banale, targeting illegal cigarette distribution networks in the area. Captain Derf Jay Maquinta, spokesperson for the Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office, confirmed the operation resulted in the confiscation of the contraband products.
The operation represents ongoing efforts by Philippine law enforcement agencies to disrupt smuggling operations that deprive the government of tax revenue and fuel organized crime networks. Officials have intensified operations against illicit trade in tobacco products across Mindanao in recent months.
The seized cigarettes were turned over to appropriate authorities for processing and disposition. Further details regarding arrests and ongoing investigations were not immediately disclosed.
