The search and recovery operation represents a significant undertaking by Vietnam's Party organization, government authorities, armed forces and civilians to fulfill their responsibility toward those who died in service to the nation. Completion of the sampling phase marks a crucial milestone in what officials have framed as a fundamental expression of national gratitude and remembrance.
Hanoi led recovery efforts with approximately 850 sets of martyrs' remains excavated from Le Thi Rieng Park over a four-month period. The capital's intensive fieldwork demonstrates the scale of the nationwide initiative, with teams systematically exhuming and cataloging human remains for subsequent identification processes.
Progress has extended beyond Hanoi's boundaries. Dong Nai province recovered 120 sets of remains from Cambodian territory, reflecting cross-border coordination in locating soldiers who fell during regional conflicts. Meanwhile, Dien Bien province has collected 81 DNA samples as part of ongoing identification efforts aimed at matching remains with missing service members' family records.
The campaign's continuation beyond this initial phase will focus on identification and repatriation procedures, utilizing DNA analysis and historical records to reunite remains with families. Officials have underscored the moral and political significance of the effort, positioning it as central to Vietnam's national priorities for the coming year.
