Hanoi dialogue charts new course for heritage preservation across Asia-Pacific

The Hanoi Outcome Document on Heritage and Authenticity sets out a fresh framework for safeguarding cultural sites and traditions across the region, marking a significant shift in conservation philosophy. The document, finalized at the two-day dialogue, prioritizes the meaningful participation of local and indigenous communities in all aspects of heritage management and decision-making.

A central tenet of the agreement is recognition that authentic heritage is not static but evolves within living communities. Rather than viewing preservation as the maintenance of fixed historical moments, the document advocates for approaches that allow traditions and practices to develop naturally while retaining their essential character and significance.

The dialogue brought together heritage experts, policymakers, and community representatives from across South and Southeast Asia to discuss contemporary approaches to conservation. Officials stressed the importance of balancing international heritage standards with local knowledge and cultural continuity, ensuring that preservation efforts strengthen rather than marginalize communities.

The Hanoi outcome represents a collaborative effort between Vietnam and UNESCO to advance regional consensus on heritage protection. Participating nations are expected to integrate the document's principles into national heritage policies and conservation programs in coming years.
