Hanoi International Film Festival positions Vietnam as regional cinema hub

Hanoi's film community is rallying around the eighth Hanoi International Film Festival (HANIFF VIII) as a platform to elevate Vietnam's standing in regional cinema and foster greater international collaboration. The festival represents a strategic effort to position the capital as a nexus for film cooperation across South and Southeast Asia.

The push for expanded film partnerships arrives at a critical juncture for the domestic industry. Box Office Vietnam data reveals that first-quarter revenue declined to approximately 1.08 trillion Vietnamese dong, compared with 1.108 trillion dong in the same period last year. Year-to-date figures through September paint a more sobering picture, with cumulative revenue reaching 2.91 trillion dong against 3.852 trillion dong for the corresponding nine-month period in 2025.

Despite these headwinds, industry stakeholders view cinema as a vital vehicle for projecting Vietnamese culture and history to international audiences. The festival's focus on cross-border cooperation reflects broader recognition that Vietnamese cinema possesses untapped potential to achieve breakthrough success on the global stage.

Recent acceptance into the Berlin summer film programme underscores growing international interest in Vietnamese cinema. Festival organizers hope that HANIFF VIII will catalyze expanded opportunities for domestic filmmakers while attracting regional talent and investment to Hanoi, potentially reversing current market trends through enhanced regional integration and cooperation.
