Hanoi launches nearly $860m plan to revitalize historic Hoan Kiem Lake district
The Vietnamese capital has proposed an ambitious urban renewal project centered on Hoan Kiem Lake that will integrate the city's cultural landmarks through expanded public spaces and improved infrastructure. The initiative aims to enhance heritage preservation while modernizing traffic systems and underground utilities across the historic ward.

Hanoi authorities have unveiled a $859 million development project to transform the Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam wards in the city center, establishing a comprehensive urban renewal scheme that will reconnect several of the capital's most significant cultural sites.
The centerpiece of the initiative involves constructing a large plaza that will directly link Hoan Kiem Lake with Cach mang thang tam (August Revolution) Square, the Hanoi Opera House, and the Vietnam National Museum of History. The project seeks to create seamless pedestrian connections between these landmarks while accommodating modern urban needs.
Beyond the main plaza, the comprehensive plan encompasses expansion of public spaces throughout the district and reorganization of both surface-level traffic systems and underground infrastructure. Planners have prioritized the preservation and promotion of the area's heritage values, which span centuries of Vietnamese history, while simultaneously introducing contemporary cultural and service facilities to serve residents and visitors.
The project reflects Hanoi's broader strategy to enhance the capital's role as a regional economic and cultural center while maintaining the historical character that defines its identity. Implementation of the plan is expected to strengthen connectivity across central Hanoi and establish the revitalized district as a premier destination for cultural engagement and urban recreation.
