Hanoi Plans Multi-Level Underground Complex at Historic Opera House

Hanoi is advancing plans to construct a multi-level underground complex around the French-built Opera House, a landmark structure in the heart of the capital's Old Quarter. The proposed development would extend four levels below ground and incorporate pedestrian tunnels designed to improve access between the Opera House and adjacent cultural venues.

The underground network is intended to strengthen connections with Trang Tien Street, a major commercial thoroughfare that borders the historic site, while facilitating movement to nearby museums, galleries, and cultural institutions. City planners view the project as a means to enhance the area's infrastructure without altering the architectural character of the French colonial district.

The scheme reflects Hanoi's broader efforts to modernize urban spaces while preserving heritage sites. By directing development underground, authorities aim to avoid surface-level disruptions to one of Vietnam's most recognizable structures, which dates to the early 20th century.
