Hanoi's $7.5B airport races to meet 2027 APEC deadline

Construction at Gia Binh International Airport, located outside Hanoi, is moving at pace as the facility targets completion of its first operational phase for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in 2027. The $7.5 billion aviation hub represents a major infrastructure investment for northern Vietnam.

Project developers report that more than 94% of the airport site has been cleared, with concurrent work advancing on multiple components including runway construction, the VIP terminal building and air traffic control facilities. The coordinated timeline reflects the significance of having the airport operational before Vietnam assumes the APEC chairmanship.

The airport is designed to serve as a major international gateway for Hanoi, supporting both civilian and strategic transport needs. Its completion would address capacity constraints at the Vietnamese capital's existing Noi Bai International Airport, which has experienced significant growth in passenger traffic over recent years.

APEC 2027 will mark a major economic and diplomatic event for Southeast Asia. Having Gia Binh International Airport operational during the forum would enhance Vietnam's capacity to receive visiting dignitaries and international delegates attending the summit and associated business activities.
