Hanoi's development spending nearly triples in nine-month period

Hanoi's development investment reached 111.69 trillion Vietnamese dong in the first nine months of the year, representing 88.6 percent of the annual target and nearly 2.8 times the spending recorded during the same period in 2025. The surge reflects the city's intensified push to modernize its infrastructure and accelerate key construction initiatives. Overall local budget expenditure stood at 72.3 percent of the annual estimate through the nine-month mark, indicating steady fiscal execution across municipal departments and agencies.

The capital is channeling resources toward several high-priority projects, including the construction of seven new bridges spanning the Red River as part of preparations for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit scheduled for 2027. In addition to infrastructure upgrades, Hanoi is pursuing economic diversification strategies aimed at boosting night-time spending among visitors to 30 percent, recognizing tourism's importance to the city's economic growth.

The accelerated spending reflects Hanoi's broader development ambitions as it seeks to enhance its competitive position regionally. The city ranked first in the 2026 Provincial Innovation Index, an achievement officials attribute to investments in technology, education, and sustainable urban development. With major international events on the horizon and rising domestic demand, municipal authorities appear determined to complete critical infrastructure before the APEC summit, positioning Hanoi as a modern, efficient regional hub.
