Harris warns of narrowing window for AI safety measures

SEOUL — Harris delivered her remarks on Wednesday, emphasising the urgency of implementing protective measures as AI systems become increasingly sophisticated and widely deployed across sectors. She underscored the need for coordinated global efforts to address the technology's potential harms before regulatory frameworks fall further behind technological advancement.

The former vice president stressed the importance of collaboration between the United States and China, framing AI governance as a matter requiring bilateral engagement despite broader geopolitical tensions between the two powers. Such cooperation, she suggested, would be essential to establishing international standards and preventing a fragmented regulatory landscape.

Harris called on both public and private sectors to prioritise safety protocols, risk assessment mechanisms, and transparency measures. She warned that without swift action, the risks associated with advanced AI systems — including issues related to data security, algorithmic bias, and misuse — could become increasingly difficult to manage.
