Hawaii's Hā'ena State Park Reopens After 39-Day Hurricane Closure

Hā'ena State Park reopened its gates on October 15 after nearly six weeks of closure caused by Hurricane Lowell's impact on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i. The partial reopening allows visitors to access designated hiking trails and Kē'ē Beach, marking the first stage of recovery for the popular destination.

Access remains substantially limited as park authorities maintain several safety measures. Overnight camping continues to be prohibited, while hikers are barred from venturing beyond two miles along the Kalalau Trail, one of the park's most renowned trekking routes. These restrictions reflect ongoing structural assessments and environmental recovery efforts across the facility.

The broader Kaua'i state parks system continues to experience significant disruptions from the hurricane. Multiple state parks across the island remain completely closed or operate under severely restricted access due to extensive storm-related infrastructure damage. Park officials have indicated that full restoration of all facilities will require considerably more time as repair and environmental assessment work progresses.
