Haze crisis deepens as API surpasses 150 across 26 Malaysian areas

A widespread haze surge has gripped Malaysia, prompting health warnings across multiple states as air quality plummets to unhealthy levels. The Air Pollutant Index exceeded the 150-mark threshold—categorized as unhealthy—in at least 26 areas nationwide, signaling the most severe air pollution episode in recent weeks.

Pasir Gudang in Johor bore the brunt of the pollution crisis, recording an API reading of 182, substantially above the unhealthy classification threshold. The southern industrial area has consistently faced severe air quality challenges, though the latest reading represents a notable deterioration in atmospheric conditions.

The widespread haze affecting multiple regions suggests transboundary pollution or localized emission sources compounding air quality issues across the country. Authorities typically attribute such episodes to a combination of factors including industrial activity, vehicular emissions, and regional atmospheric conditions that trap pollutants near ground level.

Healthcare officials have urged residents in affected areas to limit outdoor activities and take preventive health measures. Individuals with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly remain particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of prolonged exposure to poor air quality. Monitoring of API levels continues as meteorological conditions evolve.
