Haze Crisis Not About Nations, Says Malaysian MP; Companies Must Face Action

The focus on addressing the regional haze problem should centre on holding accountable the corporations behind forest fires, rather than framing the issue as a bilateral dispute, according to Syed Saddiq. The Muar Member of Parliament made the remarks in response to recent criticism from a former Indonesian trade minister, repositioning the conversation around corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Syed Saddiq stressed that enforcement actions against companies responsible for land clearing and forest fires should be applied uniformly, irrespective of whether the enterprises are Malaysian or Indonesian. This approach, he suggested, would depoliticise the haze issue and direct attention to the actual perpetrators of environmental damage affecting the region.

The statement reflects growing frustration in Malaysia over the recurring haze episodes that plague the country during dry seasons, which often originate from large-scale agricultural and land development operations in neighbouring Indonesia. Previous diplomatic tensions have surrounded the issue, with both nations trading accusations over responsibility for the transboundary pollution.

By framing the matter as one of corporate accountability rather than national blame, Syed Saddiq's position attempts to shift dialogue toward practical enforcement mechanisms and cross-border cooperation in combating illegal land clearing practices that contribute to the haze phenomenon affecting millions of people across the region.
