Haze drives double-digit drop in Singapore sports facility attendance

Outdoor sports and recreation facilities across Singapore are experiencing a notable downturn in visitor numbers as persistent haze conditions discourage residents from engaging in exercise activities. Attendance at public swimming pools and stadiums has contracted by approximately 12 per cent, reflecting the impact of air quality deterioration on leisure-time behaviour.

The decline extends across the recreational sector, with private facilities also reporting weakened traffic. Warren Golf and Country Club in Chua Chu Kang has registered a sharper contraction, with weekly attendance falling by some 20 per cent as golfers defer outings due to haze-related health concerns.

The attendance figures underscore the broader public health implications of transboundary haze episodes, which periodically affect the region and prompt health authorities to issue guidance on outdoor activity. As haze conditions persist, facility operators anticipate continued pressure on attendance until air quality metrics improve.

The situation highlights Singaporeans' responsiveness to environmental air quality alerts, with many choosing to postpone outdoor recreational activities during periods of elevated particulate matter in the atmosphere.
