Haze may reshape National Day plans but celebrations to proceed
The government has indicated that air quality concerns could prompt adjustments to the scale or venue of Malaysia's National Day commemorations on August 31, though the festivities will not be cancelled entirely.

Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said on Monday that organisers are prepared to modify arrangements for the annual August 31 celebrations should haze conditions worsen in the coming weeks. The potential modifications could affect either the scope of events or their location, officials indicated, as authorities monitor air quality forecasts across the country.
The statement comes amid seasonal concerns over transboundary haze that periodically affects Malaysia during the year's latter months. Regional air quality fluctuations have previously prompted authorities to adjust outdoor public events, particularly those involving large gatherings.
Fahmi emphasised that while contingency plans are being evaluated, the government remains committed to honouring Malaysia's independence day on August 31. The scale and logistics of celebrations may be refined depending on environmental conditions closer to the date, he added.
Authorities are working with relevant agencies to monitor air quality indices and prepare alternative arrangements if needed. Details regarding any potential venue changes or programme modifications will be announced should conditions deteriorate, officials said.
