Haze shifts westward as 41 Malaysian areas breach unhealthy pollution levels

Forty-one areas throughout Peninsular Malaysia recorded Air Pollutant Index (API) measurements in the unhealthy range on Monday, marking a significant westward shift in the region's haze problem. The widespread pollution affected communities across the peninsula, with readings climbing to levels that prompted health advisories for vulnerable populations.

In contrast, Sabah and Sarawak experienced considerable improvement in air quality during the same period, with API readings remaining well within acceptable parameters. The divergence highlighted the variable nature of transboundary air pollution in the region, which commonly shifts with prevailing wind patterns and seasonal atmospheric conditions.

The Environmental Quality Division continued monitoring air quality across all states as part of its routine surveillance programme. Residents in affected areas were advised to limit outdoor activities and take appropriate precautions, particularly those with respiratory conditions or other health vulnerabilities.

The haze episodes, which frequently impact Malaysia during certain seasons, are typically attributed to emissions from both domestic sources and transboundary pollution. Authorities have reiterated the importance of regional cooperation in addressing air quality concerns across Southeast Asia.
